Guidelines for writing a dissertation abstract

  1. Write in English.
  2. Write briefly, but don’t overdo it. The main point is that readers get an idea of the major findings. This is especially important if the results of the PhD work are not published anywhere else in English.
  3. Give full references to any journal articles in English which present the PhD work.
  4. Give a full reference for the thesis itself.
  5. Provide your address, phone, fax and e-mail so that interested readers can get in touch with you if they want to know more.
  6. State clearly who has written the abstract.
  7. If the thesis itself contains a summary in English that is longer and more detailed than the abstract submitted to ESERA, please say so, and indicate the length of this summary, e.g. ‘five pages’.
  8. Submit your manuscript in electronic form, as an email attachment using a common word-processor (preferably Word) to the ESERA Secretary, Manuela Welzel (ManuelaWelzel@gmx.de).
